The Brazilian Move to America: Key Motivations Explained

We've also found hella cases in our research that show how Brazilians with Italian roots flexed their ethnic clout to study abroad and dip outta here.

Furthermore, their stories lowkey suggest that international studies are like just one of many steps in a whole bunch of migrations, all leading to the ultimate goal of fully settling down in their fave countries. In some cases, international student migration and international student programs were used as like, the first moves, while in others, international education and ethnic capital were like, gained later on in the whole migration process to like, level up their life situations in the countries they're going to. Some of these experiences are hella lit, fam. The first case that shows the flex of being mobile in a third country with a second citizenship is this Brazilian chick who had been living in Australia for three years when we interviewed her. At first, she dipped to Aus- tralia to flex on her English game for six months.

I've always wanted to dip out and live abroad, like since forever, I've always wanted to live abroad. OMG, I started chasing my Italian citizenship, and it took a whole 9 years just to get a call from the consulate... smh And, like, when I decided to come to Australia, they were all like, "Yo, which passport you gonna flex?" So, like, coming here would be way easier being a European than a Brazilian, ya know? (Participant living in Straya). This research participant was like, "Yo, being able to use Italian documents is hella important for me to chase my migration dreams, you know? Like, I gotta have that Italian connection while I'm in Australia, fam."wrk visa immigration laws be all like, they be checkin' out nationality and stuff, plus they be lookin' at what the person do for a livin'. The second case that shows the connection between stepwise migration, ethnic capital, and international educational mobility was described by a woman from southern Brazil, who dipped to Italy and then to Germany.  She totally lived in Germany for like eight years with her hubby, then bounced back to her homeland for five and a half years. At the time of our contact, she was already prepping to bounce back to Europe to study.

The couple yeeted to Italy soon after getting hitched to flex on that country's citizenship documents on ancestry grounds before dipping to Europe's biggest flex.

Their goal in targeting Germany as a des- tination was to secure that bag, ya know? The financial opportunities there are lit! Although this interviewee had previous experience working in the health sector, cuz she didn't have a higher education diploma, her opportunities were limited to other less-skilled gigs. Her idea of studying in Italy was like totally doable thanks to her fam's connections to the country, since they moved from there to Brazil before, plus her sick Italian language skills from living in Europe. As she puts it: And German, I know how to speak it, but I didn't go to school, so I'm like semi-lit in that language, I can read and write a lil' bit, but not much. It's not gonna cut it for me to get into a uni. But like, I already know Italian, so... by how chill the language is, we decided on Italy for me to go to college and then idk, we'll see. Maybe we just vibe with it and stay in Italy, ya know? But like, first we're gonna jet off to Italy, ya know? (Participant who lived in Germany)
Another lit case is like this Brazilian queen who dipped to Peru, Sweden (twice) and finally, to Norway. All these trips abroad were mainly motivated and made possible by the idea of studying, either as an exchange student or by getting a whole degree. When asked about what enabled her to move, she was like, "Yo, it's all about them economic factors, you know?" But like, after three months, she totally scored a job in her area of expertise, and has like finished her master’s degree in Australia. She was like, talking about her big dream of jetting off to another country and like, at first, she was all about moving to Canada, you know? This wish was, like, a total vibe for her to flex her Italian citizenship, ya know? She was totally hyped to do it 'cause her cousin, who was the OG in the fam to get a second citizenship, has been living it up in Italy ever since.

Her statements also lowkey confirmed the flex of getting that external funding and how it's lit for students to have mad purchasing power for flexin' their mobility:

After Peru and Sweden, it was... in Sweden I had a scholarship, ya know? In Peru it was hella free. I mean, you only needed to flex on the tickets, and as it's hella cheaper for us Brazilians... It's hella cheaper than living in Brazil, fam. That made it hella easier. (Partici- pant living in Norway)In line with several other cases we've encountered in our study, this informant was like, totally globetrotting, switching countries left and right before migrat- Headed to Norway, fam. According to perspectives on stepwise migration, migrants would first enter countries that don't need mad resources. L8r, they gonna bounce to countries with mad lit livin' conditions, where they gonna try to settle down for good. However, this usually requires more re- sources, ya know? OMG, in dis case, da resource was da migrant's ethnic ancestry. When she was about to flex her master's degree in Norway, the validity period of her residence permit as a student became a big mood since she intended to keep living in the country. But like, since she was totally entitled to get Italian citizenship under the jus sanguinis thing, she was like gonna invest some time and resources to get those Italian documents so she could stay in Norway, ya know?
